Have you ever set out an action plan for yourself to reach your goals and the harder you try the more difficult it seems to get there? When I was younger we used to say “The hurrier I go the behinder I get!”

The mistake we make when trying to make changes and improve ourselves is that we think an ACTION plan is all we need and then we are all set. We think willpower, blood, sweat and tears is the formula for personal change. We think to reach our goals we have to work hard: “No pain, no gain.”

What we don’t realize is that the notion of an “action plan” is at the root of the problem. We think that to reach our goals the first thing we have to do is to DO something. We continue to get stressed out which of course sabotages all our “hard work” to achieve harmony at home, health and fitness, improved efficiency or whatever it is that we are working towards. What we do not realize is that the first thing we need to do is to relax, clear our minds and be still before we can be friendly, healthy and efficient! Stillness gives you the opportunity to reflect before you DO.

I took up Tai Chi earlier this year and besides the pure joy of the movement itself, the greatest lesson that I have learned is the benefit of quieting my mind and focusing on breathing and meditation as the foundation for creativity and achievement. I am learning to bring that mindfulness into the rest of my week and reaching my goals seems to be falling in to place. I would recommend it!

My wish is that we can all make time for stillness and reach all of our goals!

Have a great week.
Lisa

Tips

Stillness Formula

  1. When you feel hectic, slow down your pace.
  2. Don’t resist the emotions you feel but accept them.
  3. Take a moment of silence to centre yourself.
  4. Focus on your breathing to clear your mind.
  5. Pay attention to the insights that come to you.
  6. Let your actions flow out of those insights.
  7. Don’t react right away to e-mails or ringing phones.
  8. Leave the e-mail sit. Let the phone ring two more times.
  9. Enjoy the present moment before you move onto the next.
  10. Be amazed at how automatically you move toward your goals.
