As the Canada Day holiday falls this week, I have had thoughts of celebrations on my mind this last little while. The word celebrate comes from the Greek word melpo – meaning to sing, to dance, to praise.

That definition makes me think about all of the things that cause us to sing, dance and praise and I realized that the sweetest parts of our lives, personally and professionally, centre on celebrations. Special occasions and holidays, the completion of a job well-done and the rewards that it brings, anniversaries celebrating the longevity of a business relationship or a marriage – all of these things are cause for great celebration.

There are many day-to-day occasions that call for celebration too: small moments of joy and accomplishment that are causes to sing, dance and praise also. When a team member goes beyond the call of duty without even giving it a second thought; when two team members collaborate and come up with a result that is far beyond what they each could have accomplished alone; when a client confides that they love to work with your team because of their expertise, humour and fun-loving way of getting things done – these are all a call for great celebration. In human resources, they call these celebrations rewards and recognition, but they are all really great excuses to sing, dance and praise each other for the great things that we accomplish together.

I remember when I first started working for The Marrek Group and I was helping out at a big dinner celebration that Audie was putting on. I was already sure that I had found a great place to work. Then Audie presented me with a bouquet of flowers in front of the hall full of people to celebrate my 3 month anniversary with her. I was floored and I was hooked. That one act of celebration clinched it for me and here I am all this time later! Celebrations mean so much and can have a profound impact on us.

Let’s look for more ways to celebrate – to sing, dance and praise each other, everyday.

Please see the tips section below for help with everyday celebrations.

Have a great week.

Lisa

Marrek Moments

Town of OakvilleLisa had the great pleasure of running a joint pilot project with Service Oakville in the month of June to provide Customer Service Training for frontline and supervisory staff at the Town of Oakville. It was great fun and the team members at the Town are a very professional group, indeed. We are looking forward to an ongoing relationship to roll out Customer Service training to the entire staff of the Town of Oakville who are committed to providing the best service possible to the citizens of Oakville.

"Associates in the News" – Congratulations to Tracy Irwin! See her announcement below:

An education isn't how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It's being able to differentiate between what you know and what you don't."
-- Anatole France.

What I know for sure is that after three years of intensive study and a hair-raising commute to Toronto twice a week, I have successfully received my Financial Services Underwriting Diploma and proudly announce my new designation of  Mortgage Broker.   What I don't know is what I'm going to do with all my newly acquired spare time!
