Ever since I can remember I have been curious and inquisitive. As a child I always wore out the adults around me with my questions of “What, Why and How”. My grandmother used to call it a “thirst for knowledge”. I am certain that, when she looks down from above she is not surprised that I have pursued a career in adult education!
Through the years “experts” have dubbed this thirst for and pursuit of knowledge as “Lifelong Learning”. In her Hamilton Spectator article “We Need a National Approach” Janis Foord Kirk said “Canadians need help to make us a learning society”. She put out the challenge to policymakers in Canada to set up and fund projects that create opportunities for lifelong learning. This, she said was the only way Canada would be able to compete in a global market: by developing our human resources. Stakeholders in workplace training and education are rising to the challenge.
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada has noted a recent increase in workplace investment in human capital for the following reasons: reduced error rates by workers, employee retention as skills shortages increase, and changes in the Canadian economy including global competition for skills, a shift to a knowledge based economy, higher skill levels required for occupations and increased requirements for regulatory compliance and certification.
Canadian employers and governments are increasing their investments in training and education. This provides an opportunity for each and every Canadian to follow a path to continuous learning.
Please see the Tips Section below for ways that you can commit to lifelong learning.
Have a great week.
Lisa
