I have been thinking lately (my husband says that’s dangerous!) about what causes stress in our lives. I have come to the conclusion that we, ourselves, are at the heart of all that we find stressful.
We face many pressures everyday. There is more to do than can be accomplished in every 24 hour period. Those matters are all outside ourselves and only we can let them pressure us. In all the courses that we teach (time management, stress management and dealing with difficult behaviours) the skill that we emphasize is taking control of; yourself, your thoughts and your behaviour.
I recently had the pleasure of attending a seminar given by Lesley Andrews, a very gifted woman who overcame great odds to become a successful artist. Lesley now runs her own production company in Stratford, Ontario. She called this skill taking control of your ‘invironment’ and your ‘outvironment’. If I care about myself, think positive thoughts and maintain a positive attitude this is my ‘invironment’. That will have a positive effect on the people and places around me – my ‘outvironment’. The positive influence I exercise will help to reduce my stress. It is all a matter of taking control and keeping things in perspective.
So the next time you find yourself reacting strongly to the stresses of everyday living, ask yourself “Am I taking control of my ‘invironment’ to positively impact my ‘outvironment’?”
Please see the Tips section below for help to take control and reduce your stress.
Have a great week!
Lisa
