There is a great deal of conversation these days about getting into the flow. Creating your future by using your thoughts to create your life (“The Secret”) and finding genuine happiness by living your passion.

All of the books and the media make it sound so easy. However, there is a mindset that you must overcome to make it happen. The success literature of the past always focused on facing your challenges, fighting your weaknesses and “improving” yourself. What it all boiled down to was that you had to go against your own nature to reach your goals. I am all for getting more organized, managing time better, becoming more efficient and all those wonderful goals you set for yourself. In fact, we (at The Marrek Group) help people develop those skills every day.

What keeps coming back to me (with every article I come across, TV interview I happen to catch, e-mail that lands in my inbox) is that true success comes with bringing everything you are to what you do. Throughout your life you are told that what you are does not measure up in one way or another to the expectations of authority figures. Parents, teachers, extended family, employers, immediate supervisors, upper management, etc., all have voiced their opinions about what you should be. Truthfully, you can only improve your skills by finding ways of working and expressing yourself that are true to your own nature.

As a leader or business owner, it is worth noting that we hire an employee for the skills they bring to the table. Then, often times, due to over analyzing their productivity, we “measure” their talent out of them. A more effective plan would be to encourage employees to bring everything that they are to the job to reach their potential and take our business to the next level. While working with many organizations we have come to realize that the greatest successes a team has always comes from the way that the members bring together their unique talents to contribute to the achievement of the team’s goals.

As Dolly Parton once said, you can contribute your best to the world and reach your goals if you:

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose”

Please see the Tips section below for ideas to allow you and your team to be yourselves and “get into the flow”.

Have a great week.

Audie
