As chair of the HR Matters Committee, I had the honour last week of attending the 11th Partners in Education Breakfast hosted by the IEC (Industry- Education Council of Hamilton). Preston Manning, former Leader of the Official Opposition and Current Distinguished Visitor, University of Toronto, delivered the keynote address.
While Mr. Manning had some great advice on how to communicate (see this week's tips), I was most impressed by
the two Student Ambassadors of the Take Your Kid to Work Program, Stefany Corbo and Brian Mills. These grade nine students stood up in front of over 700 people and spoke with humour, grace and sophistication way beyond their years.
Congratulations to both of them for accomplishing something most adults would be hesitant to do.

Tips from Preston Manning on Effective Communication
- There are three parts to communicating - the source, the message and the receiver - start your communications by thinking of the receiver.
- Don't "pitch" things the way you think, pitch things the way your AUDIENCE thinks.
- Grab their attention right at the beginning.
- Stay focused.
