Marrek Moments

Audie McCarthy promoted to chair of HR Matters
April 11, 2005

Audie McCarthy, President of Marrek Solutions, has been promoted to volunteer chair of the HR Matters Steering Committee guiding Hamilton's Talent Plan. Previously, she served as co-chair for one year. Audie has faithfully served on the HR Matters steering committee for three years, participating in the Communications Sub Committee as well.

Audie's previous co-chair, Gayle Holmes, was recently promoted to Assistant Vice-president, Human Resources at Hamilton Health Sciences. Due to the added responsibilities of her new role, Gayle regrettably tendered her resignation as co-chair of the Steering Committee and as a member of the Committee.

Gayle energetically and faithfully served HR Matters for five years, part of that time as chair and/or co-chair. All of her fellow committee members will miss her, but continue to benefit from her enthusiastic leadership and insight in addressing Hamilton's workforce development opportunities and challenges.

All of the Steering Committee Members thank Gayle for her years of dedicated service and wish her all the best with her expanded responsibilities at Hamilton Health Sciences.

Tips for Hiring

  1. Hire for attitude & cultural fit, train for skills.
  2. Put personal biases aside with respect to personality.
  3. Interview a candidate more than once.
  4. Make the interview conversational, putting the candidate at ease.
  5. Don't hire clones of yourself. You need a team that compliments each others strengths and weaknesses, not one that is all the same.
  6. Recruit on an ongoing basis - don't wait until you are short staffed and desperate as this may lead you into making the wrong decision.
