Welcome to 2006! I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday season. Or, if you were like us and had to spend some time in a hospital emergency room, I hope your experience led you to count your blessings… as ours did.
My son fractured his ankle while playing hockey. Although he was hurt and disappointed, and as his mother I was obviously concerned, I am amazed at some people's responses to our positive attitude.
Hockey is a dangerous sport. I am grateful that he did not break his neck or have a head injury. I am grateful that our stay in the hospital was only a few hours long. I am thankful for the wonderful staff at Emergency Services and McMaster Hospital.
When I talk about Derek's accident and comment on how very lucky we are, that it wasn't worse, some people look at me like I must be crazy. In Emergency during the holidays?? On crutches for 6 weeks? How devastating! Devastating? No. Inconvenient? Yes. We can all handle the inconvenience.
It is all about attitude. We could look at this as if it ruined our holidays or we could look at the event as it is, an unfortunate accident that could have been worse.
We are blessed.
