Recently, I had the pleasure of doing a workshop for Mohawk College on "Getting the Best from Difficult People". This workshop was a one and a half day event held in Burlington.

I delivered the workshop for a group of people from different companies. The mix of personal backgrounds and hearing of other people's dilemmas made the course interesting and a learning experience in itself.

Using exercises, in the workshop, the group identified their "Hot Buttons". The workshop provided information on focusing on the behaviours that trigger the "Hot Buttons" and not the people. This is often hard to do, yet is the fundamental principle when dealing with difficult situations.

There is no quick fix. "Getting the Best from Difficult People" involves hard work on your part. You have to change your attitudes and behaviours. You can't change other people.

This course will be offered again July 11th & 12th in Brantford.

Tips

Work or play we run into people who we find difficult...it is not really the people it is the behaviours.

• Examine the behaviours or actions that make it difficult for you to deal with others.
• Between stimulus and response there is time for you to make a decision - choose a positive one
• Plan your response. You know how you will react to a "Hot Button", choose not to by planning a different course of action
