It is the last week of summer. Wow! I haven’t finished planting my garden yet and it is time to get the kids back in school.
This is a year of transition for our family. One daughter is going to university, my son is going to high school and my granddaughter is starting Junior Kindergarten. Change is tough. Whether they are going from a high school (with 1200 students) to a university of 20,000, or from a public school (with 350 students) to a high school of 1200 or from home to a classroom of 15 other 3 and 4 year olds, there is change and they will all go through similar feelings of nervousness, excitement, fear…
Just like employees will when their companies go through change. Whether we are parents or managers it is our job to help them cope and deal successfully with the changes they will experience.
Prepare them. Support them. Be there for them.

Helping Employees Through Change
1. Let your employees know where they fit in.
2. Communicate – many times and in many different ways.
3. Don’t make assumptions about what they know and how they feel.
4. Be positive yet realistic. No one wants to listen to a Pollyanna or Chicken Little. Find the happy medium.
5. Understand their productivity will decease and do your best to minimize it.
6. Be empathetic, not sympathetic – they need to be able to accept the change and move on.
