October 16th to the 20th is Small Business Week. In May, my small business will be five years old! I am happy to report Marrek Solutions is alive and well! When I think back over the past five years, I cannot believe how much I have learned!

Technically, I was the one who the IT department fought over and laughed at. I am sure a call for help from me was a reason for them all to go on a break! I actually had one tech hand me a pad of paper and a pen and say, “Go back to using these!” They would be proud at how far I have come!

Administratively, with sole responsibility for preparing proposals, invoicing, filing, creating mail-outs, writing documents and designing presentations etc… I really missed the support I had when working for a corporation. I learned to do it all. However, now I am thankful for the great team I have that can take over some of this!

The People Factor… I had worked with many incredible people in my corporate life. However, one thing that has always stood out for me in the world of small business is how willing people are to help one another. I thought the small business world would be more competitive but the opposite is true. I have found small business owners to be generous with both their time and knowledge. Their genuine desire to see another succeed is amazing.

I love being a small business owner and I salute all of you out there who are running your business. It is not easy, however it is gratifying and fun!

Tips For Small Businesses

1. Look after your customers. Treat them well – big or small.
2. Build strong mutually beneficial relationships.
3. Listen to anyone that will talk to you. You don’t have to do everything they say however keep an open mind.
4. Get out there and network. You won’t build your business sitting in your home office.
5. Do volunteer or community work – give back.
6. Laugh, have fun. Don’t take it all too seriously.
