I was recently reminded of the power of Stephen Covey’s philosophy of building strong emotional bank accounts with the people in our lives. A story related by a friend of mine, speaks volumes about the lasting impact of treating people well.

“Mary” was a manager for a large corporation. Over 25 years ago she worked with a bright young man with whom she developed a great rapport. She encouraged and helped him to reach his goals. She believed in him when others didn’t. She even recommended him for a promotion!

Mary and the young man both moved on and lost track of each other. The young man never forgot Mary. He never forgot the way she treated him.

Recently, Mary called her insurance company. Guess who answered her call? The same “young” man! He was a few years older, of course, but the same person inside. He thanked her for her help and her belief in him. He said that it had made a huge difference in his attitude and enjoyment of the work that he did. She could not believe the appreciation he still felt towards her so many years later!

Now, that’s powerful! So it’s true. People may not remember exactly what you said or did but they will remember how you made them feel.
