Training is very important to increase productivity and retention of great employees. However, most organizations fail in not providing coaching to help staff apply their new skills. I have found that the training that becomes a part of the organizational culture is the training that is kept alive by ongoing coaching.
By simply attending a one-day workshop one cannot learn all there is to know about something, such as conflict resolution. The workshop opens the door or plants a seed and then follow-up coaching and reinforcement helps employees put the new skills into practice and supports the development of new habits.
According to Peter West, a work issues coach, “The majority of people fear confrontation and lack the skills to approach awkward topics.” (Hamilton Spectator April 7, 2007). Workshops help people build the skills needed to broach, and resolve, awkward situations. Continuous coaching allows them to deal with issues as they come up and then get on with the business at hand.
Please see the Tips section below for advice on how to be a great coach.
