I have been thinking about the reasons for so many misunderstandings and miscommunications in organizations a lot lately. The pain and the stress that these practices cause takes a toll on productivity, relationships and the quality of work life. I have come to the conclusion that the one skill that seems to be missing (and causing this grief) is the ability to negotiate effectively.
In our Effectively Assertive course, we talk about how your communication style (passive, aggressive or assertive) invites a certain response from others. This principle affects our ability to negotiate effectively. Assertiveness and approachability are the basis for successful and effective negotiation. If we are assertive and approachable we can negotiate respectfully and effectively, avoiding the misunderstandings and miscommunications that cause such trouble in organizational life – whatever the size of our organization.
Please see the Tips section below for some of our guidelines on assertiveness and approachability.
Have a good week.
