At the end of this month we will say farewell to our wonderful Marketing Coordinator, Sherry Pelkey. Sherry is heading back home to P.E.I.. The good news is that, even though she is leaving Ontario, she is not leaving Marrek Solutions Inc! Sherry will become our first agent licensed to teach Marrek courses!

According to, Andrew Sherman (author of Franchising and Licensing: Two Powerful Ways to Grow Your Business in Any Economy), “franchising and licensing are two great methods for leveraging the intellectual capital of a company into new revenue streams, market opportunities and profit centres.” In his book, Andrew Sherman emphasizes that successful franchising and licensing is based on harmonious, long-term and interdependent relationships. You are all familiar with Marrek’s belief in building strong relationships for business success! Since the relationship is the basis for the success of the licensing agreement, who better to work out such an arrangement with than someone you trust! Sherry has been an enthusiastic and passionate member of our team and, although we will miss her physical presence here in Ontario, we know she will continue to be just as enthusiastic and passionate while representing us in PEI.

Tips

Tips for successful franchising and licensing:

1. Choose someone who you know well or you have checked out thoroughly!
2. Choose someone you know you can trust.
3. Ensure your partner has the financial background and experience required.
4. Ideally, the person should have a background in a similar business.
5. Pick someone who will be able to market their business.
6. Look for someone who is motivated, loyal and committed.
7. Clearly define the relationship from a legal standpoint (rights and responsibilities of both parties).
8. Create a clear, precise operations manual to avoid miscommunications and misunderstandings.
9. Ensure that both parties will benefit from the agreement for mutual success (win-win).
10. Continue to communicate and update your business model to meet changing market demands.
