We have all heard the story of the shoemaker’s children, right? They were the only kids on the block with no shoes! Well, since I teach and preach about goal setting I thought I would try it out on my own kids….
I asked my two teenagers to set some goals for this summer. Three, in fact – one was to be a health related goal, the second an educational goal and the third a lifestyle goal.
Derek, my fifteen year old, jumped on the bandwagon first – he still likes to please mom. His goals were: to get in shape (and he promptly went to the basement where he rode the exercise bike for 20 minutes), to read half an hour a day (wrestling magazines – can’t win them all!) and to learn landscaping techniques to keep the flowers in the garden alive.
Marlee, eighteen and never one to set goals, had some assistance from Derek and I to come up with her goals. Her goals were: to get in shape (although she failed to get on the exercise bike!), read the classics (after I vetoed watching the Discovery Channel) and to eat better (she ate an apple, some rice cakes and a cheese stick and the shock to her system left her feeling ill).

Tips for Goal Setting:
- Set goals based on your most important values.
- Keep your goals SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time sensitive)
- Break down larger goals into smaller, easily obtainable objectives.
- Plan and analyze your accomplishments on a weekly basis.
- Note where you did well and where you need to improve.
- Plan and implement changes to your strategy.
- Take care of yourself and your relationships while trying to reach your goals.
- Create a dream board of rewards for the goals you will reach.
- Take time to celebrate each objective and goal attained.
- “Feel” the sense of completion and accomplishment to help you move on to other goals
