There is so much in the news, these days, about employee skill shortages. The question that often comes to mind is: Should employers hire or train?

Within his article, in Trendwatcher e-zine, Mark Vickers (the Human Resource Institute) argues that; except for positions requiring knowledge of rapidly changing technologies, training existing employees makes the most sense. Knowledge of your company and existing social networks is a key factor in employees’ productivity and the success of your business.

According to current research, the skill sets required for success in any industry

(communication, knowledge of your market, and business strategy) is in short supply in the Canadian Labour pool. Offering training in those areas to employees, who already know your business and your customers, is a win-win for everyone – your business, your clients and the economy in general.

According to syndicated columnist Michael Kinsman, expecting society to always provide “turnkey employees” is simply unrealistic. Someone has to take responsibility for providing the training required for success in a global economy. It makes good business sense to step up to the plate!

  1. Use your employee job descriptions to develop a performance management (PM) system.

  2. Track productivity and development plans with your PM system.

  3. Identify gaps between expected and actual performance using your PM system.

  4. Ask for employee input for training requirements.

  5. Conduct a formal training needs assessment.

  6. Facilitate focus groups to determine training needs.

  7. Forecast the skills you will need before they are needed.
