Marrek Welcome

Marrek WelcomeIn the last newsletter Audie talked about measuring potential out of people. I would like to talk this week about “measuring success into” your people.

Measuring the output of your team members’ quality and quantity is an important assessment method that can lead to great performance. If your quest is for a balanced scorecard of potential and you measure only those two aspects, something will be missing. When things go wrong with the quality or the quantity of a team’s work, there are warning signs, however, typical measurement systems usually miss these symptoms. Perhaps there are indicators to be found in the input to your team’s work, perhaps in the support system that people count on to do their jobs.

If you want to measure success “into” your people, you need to keep your ear to the ground by measuring other things besides current performance. Factors, such as training and employee morale, are predictive of future performance. Clear, concise instruction and supportive recognition can help prevent performance issues further down the road. If something fails in either, or both, of these areas the inevitable consequence is a decline in the quantity and quality of the work your people are able to complete. This ultimately results in a decline of service to your customers.

If you focus on monitoring the pulse of your people it will ultimately result in a healthy “bottom line”. At The Marrek Group, our philosophy is keep an eye on the bottom line but focus on people for business success. Audie has always said, “If you look after your people, they will look after the bottom line”.

“If the bottom line is so important,
why is it at the bottom?”

MICHAEL NEILL

Please see the Tips section below for ideas to “measure success into” your people.

Have a great week.

Tips “Measuring In” Success

Training needs assessments and regular communication with your team members can help to plan for training. How can you keep tabs on morale? Three areas that you can focus on that will give you a good indication of morale on your team are: stress levels, communication climate and 360 Feedback.

  1. Conduct regular training needs assessments with your team.
  2. Use the assessments to plan your training schedule each quarter.
  3. Measure morale by assessing the stress levels of your staff.
  4. Find out the sources of the stress and improve in those areas.
  5. Include stress management as part of your training plan.
  6. Use assessments that measure communication climate.
  7. Create an open communication environment by your responses to your team.
  8. Use 360-degree feedback to encourage open communication.
  9. Continue to assess the quality and quantity of your team’s work.
  10. When things go wrong, approach it as a learning opportunity.
  11. Provide the coaching and the training they need to stay or get back on track.
