This is our 99th newsletter. Whenever I hear that number I cannot help thinking about “The Great One” #99 Wayne Gretzky. I remember seeing an interview with Wayne Gretzky when he was at the height of his career – scoring champion, team captain, “The Great One. He was asked how he prepared before a game and his answer both astounded me and gave me great insight into what it takes to be great. He talked about preparing mentally for the game, about focusing on what he was good at; knowing where everyone and everything was so he could anticipate where he needed to be during the play
The same has been said of Tiger Woods, Jackie Robinson, Michael Jordan – some of the most celebrated athletes of our time – all focus on what they do best and have risen to the top of their game.
What lessons can we take from these athletes for focus in our own careers? In his book “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap…and Others Don't” Jim Collins talks about the ability of an organization to focus on what it is good at. He advises that the most successful organizations with excellent business results year-over-year are the ones that focus on the few things that they do best – a clearly defined “Core Business”.
The same is true for individuals. Marcus Buckingham at http://www.marcusbuckingham.com , is a talent and performance expert who has studied the most successful organizations in the world. What he has found is that team members from all of the organizations at the top of their industry have one thing in common: they spend at least 75% of their work day doing what they love and what they do best. For giving their employees the gift of spending their time this way, these organizations surpass their competitors on all business metrics including revenue and profitability. Focusing on what you are good at helps you to contribute to your organization and build your own career!
How can we get that laser focus that has helped great athletes and great business people surpass all expectations in their field?
Please see the Tips section below for help to focus on success.
Have a great week.
Lisa
